The arrival of the horse-drawn railway in Rivarolo in 1866 led to the construction of the rail yard and the station.
A horse-drawn railway was a railway in which the carriages were pulled by horses rather than by a locomotive; in fact, the first train to reach Rivarolo in 1866 was pulled by a pair of horses.
At first, the station was a two-storey building with a three-arched portico leading to the ticket office, with offices and waiting rooms in the side wings and staff accommodation on the upper floor.
In 1874, the engineer Fausto Gozzano, father of the poet Guido Gozzano, oversaw its enlargement and added large windows on both floors of the central block.
