The Church of the Confraternity of the Holiest Name of Jesus was founded between the late 16th and early 17th centuries as the seat of the lay confraternity of the same name, inspired by devotion to the Holiest Name of Jesus spread through the preaching of Saint Bernardino of Siena.
The building was deeply transformed in the 18th century under the direction of the Lugano architect Pietro Bonvicini, who gave it the monumental appearance still visible today.
Outside, the most striking features are the exposed brick façade, the 17th-century bell tower attached to the right side, and the large carved wooden portal, one of the church’s most precious elements.
The portal, richly sculpted, is divided into panels decorated with shells, plant motifs, angel heads, full-length angels, and the confraternity’s patron saints, Saint Bernardino of Siena and Saint John the Baptist holding the Agnus Dei.
The façade, once enriched with frescoes that are now lost, stands out for the elegance of its lesenes, its classical pediment, and its balanced architectural composition.
Inside, particular highlights are the refined illusionistic decorative scheme created in the 18th century and the paintings by Vittorio Amedeo Rapous, including the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple and the Madonna of the Angels with Saint Ursula and Saint Erasmus.
Today the church has a new liturgical function and is home to the Orthodox religious community, remaining a place of prayer and gathering.
