These remains belong to the ancient medieval walls that once defended the castrum of Rivarolo.
The construction of the walls was authorized in 1357 by Amadeus VI of Savoy, and their quadrangular perimeter, with sides of about 350 metres, enclosed the area of what is now the historic centre.
The fortification was built entirely of river pebbles and included wall walks, probable defensive towers, and three main gateways: on the south and north sides, along the axes of Via Trieste and Via Farina, and on the west side, along Via Ivrea.
The visible remains still preserve the characteristic sfishbone texure, created by arranging the pebbles in oblique rows that lean in opposite directions.
