The Castellazzo is one of Rivarolo’s oldest and most evocative landmarks. It is linked to the ancient castrum Riparolii, around which first nucleus of the town devepoled. Its existence is certainly documented in 1142, although some sources suggest an even earlier origin.

During the Middle Ages, it belonged to the counts of San Martino and Valperga and played an important defensive role in the area. As Rivarolo expanded and the castle gradually lost its strategic importance, the complex was progressively abandoned and eventually fell into ruin.

In the eighteenth century, the site was acquired by the Counts Toesca, who began its recovery. In the nineteenth century, under the direction of architect Formento, it was transformed into a noble residence, incorporating the remains of the earlier fortified structure.

Today, the Castellazzo still preserves visible traces of its medieval past, especially its crenellated tower, dating from the twelfth century, along with surviving battlements and other architectural details. Although its original appearance has been deeply altered over time, the site remains an important witness to the history of Rivarolo. It is now partly privately owned and partly used as a care home.
