The building that now houses the “Domenico Besso Marcheis” Public Library is a fourteenth-century fortified house and one of the most significant examples of medieval civil architecture in Rivarolo.
Its façade still preserves important original features, including stone-and-brick masonry, an ogival window, and a large pointed arch, suggesting that the building may once have served a public function.
In the eighteenth century, it was transformed into the Town Theatre and enriched with decorations by Count Giulio Toesca di Castellazzo. During visits by the Dukes of Chiablese, the theatre obtained the title of Ducal Theatre.
After a long period of decline, the building was used as a cinema and later as a municipal warehouse, eventually coming close to demolition.
The restoration completed in 1982 recovered its historical and architectural value and adapted it to its present role as the town library.
The façade also features a terracotta high relief by Renzo Igne, depicting symbols of the town and its activities, a striking sign of the dialogue between medieval heritage and contemporary intervention.
